Since the twins are getting older I wanted to create a desk for them to work at that was their size. My mom had this desk and chairs from when my sister and I were young kids. I remember it being in rough shape then, so it absolutely needed some help. Also the stickers had to go.
I started by using some 40 grit sandpaper to get all the old stain off and worked my way up to get everything smoothed down. I had to glue some bits of the chairs back together and really had to work on the edges that were coming up.
This was about as sanded down as I could get the chairs. They were finally smooth enough not to tear your legs apart as you sat on them.
Finally, I had to decide how I wanted to stain them. I thought I wanted them to have a dark stain on the seat and back, with white paint on the legs, but that look just didn't work out well. I spent a lot of time going back and forth on what I wanted. My main problem is that I'm indecisive and impatient. I wanted this done quickly but also I knew I needed to do it right.
I finally settled on a gray stain on the legs and rung, and a white wash on top of that. Then a dark walnut stain on the seat, chair back and desk top. I'm very please with how it turned out! The kids love it. They love that it is their own and that it is just their size.
What a transformation this set has made! I love that I was able to repurpose something for my kids that my sister and I used when we were young.
